Text:There is no reference to the earlier protologue. Cleve uses the notation pp. 20 & 58 of Ceratium (tripos var. ) bucephalum. On p. 36 he uses the notation Ceratium bucephalum.

Comment:Huisman 1989 Aust. Syst. Bot. 2:450 places this name in synonymy with Ceratium symmetricum and notes the similarity of C. symmetricum and Ceratium arietinum. This name is often placed as a subspecies of C. arietinum. The taxon is considered a separate species by Throndsen et al 2004:78
