The two varieties grade into each other (Wilson, 1984), and are no longer recognised in WA. Thought to hybridise with Sclerolaena spp., the progeny being known as O. x scleropterum. Hybrids between O. acropterum and O. pentapterum are known from Qld. Sclerolaena divaricata hybridises with Osteocarpum acropterum in Victoria, the progeny being known as S. x caput-medusae.
