- Chippendale (1988) treated all the coolabahs under the name E. microtheca. Hill & Johnson (1994) adopted much narrower species concepts, recognising 8 species and several subspecies in the complex and many intergrades. In Euclid (2006) an intermediate approach was adopted, recognising Hill & Johnson's E. acroleuca, and E. victrix, and keeping E. coolabah and E. microtheca distinct. A reputed hybrid E. microtheca x E. populnea is the basis of E. bucknellii Cambage (Pryor & Johnson, 1971; Chippendale, 1988). Hybrids between E. microtheca (including E. cyanoclada) and E. pruinosa are recorded (Hill & Johnson, 1994). A reputed hybrid ?E. populnea x E. microtheca is the basis of E. populnea var. obconica (Pryor & Johnson, 1971; Chippendale, 1988). Hybrids are recorded between E. pruinosa subsp. pruinosa and 'E. tropica' (=E. leucophylla), E. limitaris and E. microtheca (Hill & Johnson, 2000). A reputed hybrid E. melanophloia x E. microtheca is the basis for E. rivularis Blakely (Pryor & Johnson, 1971; Chippendale, 1988). Intergrades are recorded between E. victrix and 'E. barklyensis' (=E. microtheca) (Hill & Johnson, 1994). A reputed hybrid E. microtheca x E. albens is the basis for E. yagobiei Maiden (Pryor & Johnson, 1971; Chippendale, 1988). The first parent in the latter cross might also be E. coolabah.
