- APC Comment
- The nomenclature of this taxon is confused. It is generally accepted that it arose as a natural or deliberate hybrid between P. orientalis and P. occidentalis, and is now widely cultivated under the common name London Plane. The name P. x acerifolia has traditionally been applied to the taxon. However, some believe that the name P. hispanica has priority, and this name is used, for example, in Flora Iberica. Other works, for example, Flora of China, Flora Europaea maintain usage of P. [x] acerifolia. Geerinck, Bull. Jard. Bot. Nat. Belg. 49: 160-161 (1979) provided a history of the taxon and concluded that P. x hispanica had priority. But see also G.Lopez Gonzalez, An. Jard. Bot. Madrid 56(1): 159-161 (1998) and A.Vigouroux et al., Acta Bot. Gallica 144(2): 243-251 (1998) in which the hybrid origin of the taxon was confirmed, but the name P. orientalis var. acerifolia or P. acerifolia (respectively) was adopted.
