Vascular Plants
Australian Plant Name Index (APNI)
The Australian Plant Name Index (APNI) is a tool for the botanical community that deals with plant names and their usage in the scientific literature, whether as a current name or synonym. APNI does not recommend any particular taxonomy or nomenclature. For a listing of currently accepted scientific names for the Australian vascular flora, please use the Australian Plant Census (APC) link above.
Etymology:"Dixi in honorem amici aestimati - - LECHENAULT, peregrinatoris celebris, botanici periti, cujus illustrationes plantarum orae occidentalis praesertim Novae Hollandiae, nec non Insularum Javae, et Timor avidè expectantur."
Etymology:"After Leschenault de la Tour, 1773-1826, botanist of the voyage of discovery under Captain Nicolas Baudin, which visited Australia in 1802-3."
Comment:'...named after Jean-Baptiste Louis-Claude-Theodore Leschenault de la Tour (1773-1826), botanist with Nicolas Baudin's expedition to Australia (1800-1804).'
APC Comment:The original spelling of this name was Lechenaultia, but Bentham in Endlicher (1837) and de Candolle (1839) introduced the variant spelling Leschenaultia, which was used fairly consistently from then until the 1950s. A gradual return to the original spelling then occurred. See D.A.Morrison, Brunonia 9: 6 (1987) for discussion.
