Australian Plant Name Index (APNI)
The Australian Plant Name Index (APNI) is a tool for the botanical community that deals with plant names and their usage in the scientific literature, whether as a current name or synonym. APNI does not recommend any particular taxonomy or nomenclature. For a listing of currently accepted scientific names for the Australian vascular flora, please use the Australian Plant Census (APC) link above.
Text:"ZYGOPHYLLUM GLAUCUM - p. 102. The specific name of this plant is to be altered in Z. glaucescens since Prof. E. Meyer pre-employed the above name for a South African species (conf. Flora, Botanische Zeitung, 1843; Harvey & Sonder, Flora Capensis, i. 362)."
Comment:The name “Zygophyllum glaucescens F.Muell. var. glaucescens” is listed by A.D.Chapman, Austral. Pl. Name Index 3030 (1991), but since the species name is illegitimate this autonym is not established, in accordance with ICN Art. 27.2 (Melbourne Code, 2012).
Comment:As Mueller states, E. Meyer (Flora 26: 230 (1843)) had previously published the name Zygophyllum glaucum in a list of South African species but did not provide a description for it. The name was validated by W.H.Harvey & O.W.Sonder, Fl. Cap. 1: 362 (1860), but this post-dates Mueller's 1855 publication of Z. glaucum for an Australian taxon. Mueller's publication of Z. glaucescens as a replacement name is thus superfluous.
