Australian Plant Name Index (APNI)
The Australian Plant Name Index (APNI) is a tool for the botanical community that deals with plant names and their usage in the scientific literature, whether as a current name or synonym. APNI does not recommend any particular taxonomy or nomenclature. For a listing of currently accepted scientific names for the Australian vascular flora, please use the Australian Plant Census (APC) link above.
Comment:A.D.Chapman, Austral. Pl. Name Index 18 (1991) lists 'Acacia armata var. angustifolia Benth. (1855), nom. illeg.'. However, Bentham (1855) explicitly cites "Benth. in Lond. Journ. Bot. v. 1. p. 327" [i.e. G.Bentham, London J. Bot. 1: 327 (1842)], the place of publication of both Acacia armata Benth. and Acacia armata var. angustifolia Benth. This is thus here considered a secondary reference by Bentham, and not an attempt to publish a new name.
Comment:Chapman indicates that Bentham published this name twice, once in 1842 (London J. Bot. 1: 328) and again in 1855 (Linnaea 26: 605). Chapman lists the status of the "later" name as "nom. illeg. – non Benth. (1842)", but Bentham (1855) directly refers to his 1842 publication. The 1855 publication is thus here treated as a later use by Bentham of his earlier published name, not an attempt to create a new name.
