When publishing the name Xylosma G.Forster, Fl. Ins. Austr. 72 (1786) used species epithets that indicate it as being of neuter gender (e.g. X. orbiculatum ) and this has been adopted by most subsequent Australian authors. However, the ICN (Art. 62.2 (b.) Ex. 5, Melbourne Code (2012)) mandates a feminine gender for genera ending in "-osma", which is adopted here.
