Comment: Clayton 1974 Austr J. Bot. 22:798 synonymised this taxon with Pylaiella littoralis. In 2010 P. varia and P. ittoralis are considered separate taxa. P. varia does not occur in Australia. The name appear in this database because it occurs in Australian literature.
