The Australian Algae Name Index (AANI) is a tool for the botanical community that deals with algae names and their usage in the scientific literature, whether as a current name or synonym. AANI does not recommend any particular taxonomy or nomenclature. For a listing of currently accepted scientific names for the Australian Algae, please use the Australian Algae List (AAL) link above.

Comment: Hooker & Harvey indicate in the type statement and the protologue they consider there to be more than one variety. They name the second variety - var. B bifida. Edyvane & Womersley (1993):239 indicate that the illustration tab LXXIII is of a cystocarpic plant. The specimens in BM are male and tetrasporic, the cystocarpic plant was not found. No lectotype was chosen from these specimens. Parkinson (1980) Halymenia The Pettifogging Press p.14 does not indicate which of the type material he studied. Halymenia latissima H & H represents the earliest name for the taxon Rhodoglossum gigartinoides. The combination R. latissima (H&H) comb. nov. cannot be made since this name was used by Agardh to describe different material.
