Comment: This is the first alga to be collected by western europeans in Australian waters. The collector was William Dampier as 'Fucus foliis capillaceis brevissimis, vesiculis minimis donatis'. It was collected between August and September 1699 probably as drift somewhere between the Abrolhos Is and La Grange Bay W.A.. The speciemen is illustrated as Tab 2, fig 4 in Dampier, W. 1703 and is held at OXF. -
