A.D.Chapman, Austral. Pl. Name Index 2124 (1991) and I.R.H.Telford,Fl. Australia 4: 70 (1984) indicate Opuntia monacantha is based on Cactus monacantha Willd. However, Haworth's protologue does not support this interpretation (see also GRIN database: http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgs/html/taxon.pl?25858)
