An Asian taxon, now referred to Boehmeria virgata var. macrostachya (Wight) Friis & Wilmot-Dear, listed in synonymy of Boehmeria macrophylla Hornem. by W.-L.Chew in A.S.George (ed.), Fl. Australia 3: 85 (1989). Boehmeria macrophylla is considered to have been misapplied to Boehmeria virgata var. austroqueenslandica (Domin) Friis & Wilmot-Dear in Australia.
