Chippendale (1988) treated the coolabahs under the name E. microtheca. Hill & Johnson (1994) adopted much narrower species concepts, recognising 8 species and several subspecies in the complex and many intergrades. In Euclid (2006) an intermediate approach was adopted, recognising Hill & Johnson's E. acroleuca, and E. victrix, and keeping E. coolabah and E. microtheca distinct.
