P.I.Forster, Fl. Australia 28: 133 (1996) identified A. thozetii as Alyxia stellata var. amoena (A.C.Sm.) A.C.Sm., native to Fiji, and suggested it was a fleeting garden escape in Qld. Middleton (2002) included this taxon in a very broad A. stellata. Both Forster, Austral. Syst. Bot. 5(5): 570-571 (1992) and Middleton, Blumea 45(1) (2000) synonymised A. obtusifolia under A. spicata, but it was moved to A. stellata by Middleton (2002). For a full synonymy and discussion of nomenclature of A. stellata see Middleton (2002).
