Maslin in Nuytsia 4 (1982) discussed two unnamed variants of A. stowardii from the Hamersley Range, WA. Pedley in Contr. Queensland Herbarium 15 (1974) and Kodela in Flora of Australia 11B (2001) considered that A. sibirica S.Moore was conspecific with A. kempeana. However, Pedley in Austrobailey 6 (2003) after re-examination of the type considered A. sibirica to be conspecific with A. stowardii, and to predate it. This taxon is still recognised as A. stowardii in NT. Pedley (pers. comm.) considers that the Hamersley taxa have little relationship to this species as now defined. Acacia clivicola is generally considered to be synonymous with A. sibirica/A. stowardii, but in Qld is considered a distinct species.
