The name F. carolana F.Muell. was considered by Stone (1982) to be a nomen nudum, and by Chapman (1991) to be a provisional name. This is not so. Mueller provided a (brief) description, comparing his plant with F. insignis, and was satisfied that it was distinct. He provided a name (diffidently) but there is no suggestion that he did not accept it. Blume's name however has priority if the two are considered conspecific.
