The epithet represents the place of collection of the type, Carthagena [Cartagena] in Colombia, South America. The spelling of the epithet in the protologue was as 'carthaginensis'. Jacquin used this same epithet in the same publication for species in 12 other genera. In every other case he spelt the epithet as 'carthagenensis'. In a subsequent paper (N.J. von Jacquin, Select. 5 (1763)) he changed the spelling of the epithet in Justicia to 'carthagenensis' as well, and this spelling is adopted here.
