P.S.Green, Fl. Australia 50: 497 (1993), reports a misapplication of Panicum sanguinale L. to this taxon on Christmas Island by H.N.Ridley, J. Straits Branch Roy. Asiat. Soc. 45: 241 (1906). In Ridley’s publication the name is given as “P. sanguniale var. commutatum” without authorship or publication details. It seems most likely Ridley is referring to Paspalum sanguinale var. commutatum (Schult.) Hook.f., Fl. Brit. India 7: 15 (1896). This combination does not seem to exist in Panicum and there is no indication that Ridley intended to publish a new name.
