P.B.Tomlinson, The Botany of Mangroves 361 (1986) argues the epithet should be spelled "hydrophyllacea", derived from the Greek 'hydro' (water) and 'phyllon' (leaf). However, an alternative derivation of the epithet (in keeping with Gaertner's original spelling) is 'hydro' (water) and 'phylax' (a guardian or protector), and this is adopted here.
