Cook & Ritishauser (2001) treated this species as Tristicha australis, sinking Malaccotristicha into Tristicha. Kato et al. (2003) argued on molecular grounds that Malaccotristicha should remain distinct from Tristicha. Kato et al. found that M. australis was nested within SE Asian M. malayana on molecular data, but distinct morphologically.
