Mueller (1876) listed this species as N. coerulea and this spelling has subsequently been adopted occasionally, as for example by APNI (1991). The accepted orthography is N. caerulea. The name N. caerulea subsp. zanzibarensis has been applied to Australian naturalised populations in error. Subspecies zanzibarensis is only known in Australia in cultivation (S.W.L.Jacobs, pers. comm.).
