- Orchard (1983) recognised four varieties for P. juniperina in Tasmania but did not study mainland populations. Weston (1995) sunk these varieties back into a unitary P. juniperina because the revision was geographically incomplete, because the rank of variety was not congruent with that of subspecies recognised elsewhere in his treatment, and because intergradation between the varieties occurred in Tasmania. The Orchard varieties included the type of the species, and thus future consideration of infraspecific taxa on mainland Australia can proceed unhindered by Orchard's treatment. The ranks of variety and subspecies are both permitted under the ICBN, and the rank of variety is appropriate in this case in Tasmania, taking into account morphological variation and geographical distribution (Weston elsewhere documents intergradation between taxa recognised even at species level, describing it variously as hybridisation, clinal variation or intergradation). The varietal classification is found useful in Tasmania and used in recent surveys and publications. The mainland populations need revision. Hybridises occasionally with P. rigida in Victoria.
