A putative hybrid M. heteromera x M. secunda is possibly the basis of M. secunda var. dichotoma C.Moore & E.Betche, fide Johnson (1959). Chapman, APNI 1918 (1991) listed "Macrozamia spiralis var. secunda (C.Moore) Maiden & Betche, nom. illeg., non Benth. (1873)". Maiden & Betche (1906) based their name on "Macrozamia secunda C.Moore" which itself was based on M. spiralis var. secunda Benth. There seems no doubt therefore that the Maiden & Betche usage was a case of them overlooking Bentham's basionymic usage of the combination and their name should be considered isonymous with that of Bentham.
