A very variable taxon. Eucalyptus drepanophylla is recognised as a distinct species (syn. E. sp. Caldervale D.Jermyn AQ582304, E. sp. Scartwater L.Pedley X6404) in Qld. Hybrids are recorded between E. crebra and numerous other taxa, viz: E. brownii (with E. drepanophylla (= E. crebra)) (R.J.F.Henderson, Names Dist. Qld Pl., Algae & Lichens: 124, 2002), E. caleyi subsp. caleyi (K.D.Hill & L.A.S.Johnson, Telopea 4: 245, 1991), E. coolabah (K.D.Hill & L.A.S.Johnson, Telopea 5: 762, 1994), E. decorticans, E. fibrosa subsp. fibrosa, E. fibrosa subsp. nubila, E. melanophloia (with E. xanthoclada (= E. crebra)), E. microcarpa, E. moluccana, E. orgadophila, E. populnea, E. shirleyi, and E. thozetiana (R.J.F.Henderson, Names Dist. Qld Pl., Algae & Lichens: 124, 2002). Reputed hybrids involving E. crebra are the basis for a number of names (see L.D.Pryor & L.A.S.Johnson, A Classification of the Eucalypts, 1971) viz: E. bipileata Blakely (E. crebra x E. melanophloia); E. leptocarpa Blakely (E. crebra x E. viridis); E. peacockeana Maiden (E. crebra x E. melliodora); E. rariflora F.M.Bailey (E. crebra x E. populnea); E. taylori Maiden (E. crebra x E. conica) and E. tenandrensis Maiden (E. crebra x E. melliodora)
