There are two references that may be the protologue for the name Amaranthus muricatus (Moq.) Hieron. G.Hieronymus published the name in Pl. Diaph. Fl. Argent. 227 (Dec. 1882; fide F.A.Stafleu & R.S.Cowan, Taxonomic Lit. II 194 (1979)) and Bol. Acad. Nac. Ci. Republ. Argent. 4: 421 (unknown month,1882). It is uncertain which of these works has priority, as they are identical treatments and both are dated "Diciembre 1882". In the absence of further information the Pl. Diaph. Fl. Argent. publication is chosen here due to the more precisely known publication date. Authorship is sometimes erroneously given as the much later (Moq.) Hicken, Apuntes Hist. Nat. 2: 92 (1910).
