The complex of taxa revolving around C. dichromophloia are still poorly understood and many different taxonomies have been proposed. The one adopted here is conservative, recognising a single variable species. Others prefer to recognise a number of separate segregate species, between which there is considerable intergradation and hybridisation. These segregates include C. capricornia, C. drysdalensis, and C. rubens. Even with these segregates included in a broad C. dichromophloia, there is still considerable intergradation with other species. Intergrades are known between C. dichromophloia (and as 'C. rubens' and 'C. drysdalensis') and C. greeniana. Some intergradation occurs between C. umbonata and C. dichromophloia ('C. capricornia') near Larrimah, NT (Hill & Johnson, 1995). The type of Eucalyptus x urnularis D.J.Carr & S.G.M.Carr is a hybrid between C. latifolia and C. dichromophloia (Hill & Johnson, 1995). Corymbia coniophloia was considered by Hill & Johnson (1995) to be based on intergrade material between C. capricornia and C. drysdalensis, both now included in C. dichromophloia. Hybrids are recorded for NT between C. dichromophloia ('C. capricornia') and C. terminalis ('C. opaca') (Hill & Johnson, 1995). Hybrids are recorded for NT and WA between C. dichromophloia ('C. capricornia' and 'C. drysdalensis') and C. polycarpa (Hill & Johnson, 1995). Former records from SA are now referred to C. eremaea subsp. eremaea.
