The epithet of this species was originally spelled 'rheedii', probably after H.A.Rheede as the description of the basionym refers to “Entada. Rheed. mal. 9. p. 151. t. 67.” [i.e. H.A.Rheede, Hort. Malab. (1689)]. Even if Sprengel had intentionally Latinised the surname to 'Rheedius', the correct spelling of the epithet would be 'rheedei' under ICN Art. 60.7 (Melbourne Code, 2012).
