The specific epithet is sometimes 'corrected' to "gossypiifolia", but there is no direct evidence that Linnaeus' name is based on the Latinised generic name Gossypium rather than on the Greek word for cotton, 'gossypion'. On this basis, the original orthography is maintained here.
