Vascular Plants
Australian Plant Name Index (APNI)
The Australian Plant Name Index (APNI) is a tool for the botanical community that deals with plant names and their usage in the scientific literature, whether as a current name or synonym. APNI does not recommend any particular taxonomy or nomenclature. For a listing of currently accepted scientific names for the Australian vascular flora, please use the Australian Plant Census (APC) link above.
Comment:There are two references that may be the protologue for the name Amaranthus muricatus (Moq.) Hieron. G.Hieronymus published the name in Pl. Diaph. Fl. Argent. 227 (Dec. 1882; fide F.A.Stafleu & R.S.Cowan, Taxonomic Lit. II 194 (1979)) and Bol. Acad. Nac. Ci. Republ. Argent. 4: 421 (unknown month,1882). It is uncertain which of these works has priority, as they are identical treatments and both are dated "Diciembre 1882". In the absence of further information the Pl. Diaph. Fl. Argent. publication is chosen here due to the more precisely known publication date. Authorship is sometimes erroneously given as the much later (Moq.) Hicken, Apuntes Hist. Nat. 2: 92 (1910).
