The Australian Plant Name Index (APNI) is a tool for the botanical community that deals with plant names and their usage in the scientific literature, whether as a current name or synonym. APNI does not recommend any particular taxonomy or nomenclature. For a listing of currently accepted scientific names for the Australian vascular flora, please use the Australian Plant Census (APC) link above.

Type: Althenia filiformis F.Petit
-
Etymology: "Nomen genericum imposui in memoriam B. Althen, de patriâ nostrâ benè meriti, qui sub medium elapsi seculi, Rubiae tinctoriae culturam, per Gallo-provinciam et occitaniam instituit."
-
Etymology: "After J. Althen, a Persian, who took refuge in France and introduced the cultivation of madder, Rubia tinctorum, in 1760."
-
Comment: Chapman lists the type species of the genus as "Althenia ruppia", a name which does not exist. This is apparently a misinterpretation of the protologue, in which Petit provides a diagnosis to distinguish his new genus from Ruppia L.
