Australian Plant Name Index (APNI)
The Australian Plant Name Index (APNI) is a tool for the botanical community that deals with plant names and their usage in the scientific literature, whether as a current name or synonym. APNI does not recommend any particular taxonomy or nomenclature. For a listing of currently accepted scientific names for the Australian vascular flora, please use the Australian Plant Census (APC) link above.
Comment:Beauvois refers both the American Agrostis scabra Willd. (1797) and the Australian Agrostis scabra R.Br. (1810), nom.illeg., to Vilfa with an expression of doubt in each case. Since Beauvois did not definitely designate a basionym, "Vilfa scabra" is here treated here as a nom. inval., nom. nud.
Text:" 'Agrostis scabra R. Brow.' and 'A. scabra Wild.' are referred to Vilfa. Doubtless neither species was known to Beauvois. Willdenow's name, being the earlier, is taken as the basis of Vilfa scabra Beauv. = Agrostis hiemalis (Walt.) B.S.P. Robert Brown's species belongs in Calamagrostis."
APC Comment:The status of this name is uncertain, but may possibly be referable to Lachnagrostis rudis. Beauvois (Ess. Agrost. 148 (1812)) refers both Agrostis scabra R.Br. and Agrostis scabra Willd. to synonymy of Vilfa scabra, but indicates doubt in both cases. Due to this expression of uncertainty and since the two taxa named Agrostis scabra are quite different, one occuring in North America and one in Australia, Beauvois is not considered to have validly made the combination.
