Australian Plant Name Index (APNI)
The Australian Plant Name Index (APNI) is a tool for the botanical community that deals with plant names and their usage in the scientific literature, whether as a current name or synonym. APNI does not recommend any particular taxonomy or nomenclature. For a listing of currently accepted scientific names for the Australian vascular flora, please use the Australian Plant Census (APC) link above.
Comment:A.D.Chapman, Austral. Pl. Name Index 1464 (1991), lists "Grevillea aquifolia Steudel... nom. illeg. non Lindley (1838)". However, Steudel (1840) explicitly cites "Grevillea aquifolia. Cunningh.". This is here considered to be a secondary reference by Steudel to G. aquifolium Lindl., rather than an attempt to publish a new name.
Lectotype:"(here designated): Interior of New Holland. G. aquifolium m.[mihi, i.e. Lindley] Mt William. Major Mitchell's Expedition, 1836. 232 (CGE–specimen at the lower left of the sheet)"
APC Comment:Most authors have adopted the orthography Grevillea aquifolium, following Lindley's original spelling. A.D.Chapman, APNI 1464 (1991) considered this to be an orthographic error to be corrected, and adopted the spelling Grevillea aquifolia. Alternatively it can be argued that the epithet is a noun in apposition, comparing this plant with the genus Aquifolium, a view accepted here, and the correct orthography is Grevillea aquifolium.
