The Australian Plant Name Index (APNI) is a tool for the botanical community that deals with plant names and their usage in the scientific literature, whether as a current name or synonym. APNI does not recommend any particular taxonomy or nomenclature. For a listing of currently accepted scientific names for the Australian vascular flora, please use the Australian Plant Census (APC) link above.

Comment: Although Bentham described his variety under Agrostis scabra R.Br., it remains valid under the earlier homonym, and thus legitimately establishes the autonym under the earlier homonym.

APC Comment: Listed by A.D.Chapman, Austral. Pl. Name Index 141 (1991), as the autonym established by A. scabra var. elatior. Agrostis scabra Willd. is regarded as a misapplication to A. parviflora R.Br., although the autonym has not been used in the Australian literature. While G.Bentham, Fl. Austral. 7: 576 (1878), described Agrostis scabra var. elatior under Agrostis scabra R.Br., his varietal name remains valid under the earlier homonym, and thus legitimately establishes the autonym under the earlier homonym of Willdenow.
