Vascular Plants
Australian Plant Name Index (APNI)
The Australian Plant Name Index (APNI) is a tool for the botanical community that deals with plant names and their usage in the scientific literature, whether as a current name or synonym. APNI does not recommend any particular taxonomy or nomenclature. For a listing of currently accepted scientific names for the Australian vascular flora, please use the Australian Plant Census (APC) link above.
Text:"I propose the generic name as above, as a tribute to Dr. Ludwig Leichhardt, the well known Australian explorer, (who, there is much reason to fear, has fallen a victim to his intrepidity, in prosecuting his disinterested researches. May, 1850.)"
Text:"Leichhardtia macleayana Shepherd"
Comment:Shepherd indicates in a footnote that "this handsome tree... in some important characters... differs considerably from" Araucaria but does not specify these differences or provide any reference to a previously and effectively published description or diagnosis. The name is thus not validly published under ICN Art. 38.1 (Shenzhen Code, 2018).
