Vascular Plants
Australian Plant Name Index (APNI)
The Australian Plant Name Index (APNI) is a tool for the botanical community that deals with plant names and their usage in the scientific literature, whether as a current name or synonym. APNI does not recommend any particular taxonomy or nomenclature. For a listing of currently accepted scientific names for the Australian vascular flora, please use the Australian Plant Census (APC) link above.
Comment:It is likely that Maiden and Blakely intended to maintain the meaning of the varietal epithet of Acacia retinodes var. gilliorum (honouring two male persons with the surname Gill) when recognising the taxon at species rank. However, they provided no explicit etymology and the varietal name was illegitimate and superfluous. Maiden & Blakely's is thus both a replacement name and a name at a new rank and the epithet gilliorum does not have priority. The name is maintained here in the form originally published, as Acacia gillii Maiden & Blakely.
