Etymology: "The genus is named in honour of Dr Philip Cantino, Ohio, whose researches on Lamiaceae, especially the delimitation of its suprageneric taxa and his studies on the distinguishing characters between this family and the Verbenaceae, have greatly advanced our understanding of the group."
