Type: "Floating in still water, Dog River, Mobile County, Alabama, Mohr, August 14, 1893."

Etymology: "The epithet filiformis is Latin for 'thread-like' and refers to the narrow leaves of this species."

APC Comment: R.J.Adair et al., Plant Prot. Quart. 27: 48 (2012), cite a collection from Tas. However this specimen may represent cultivated material and this taxon is not known to be naturalised in that state (M.L.Baker, pers. comm. 2013).
