Etymology: "The species is named in honour of Andrew Arthur Mitchell, formerly of Meekatharra, Western Australia, and presently of Darwin, Northern Territory. Andrew developed considerable familiarity with the flora of the eastern Pilbara region while conducting rangeland assessment studies there and has made many important contributions to our knowledge of the heliotrope flora of the Australian western arid zone, including making the second and third collections of the unusual species H. muticum Dornin that was first collected in the latter part of the 19th century."
