The Australian Plant Name Index (APNI) is a tool for the botanical community that deals with plant names and their usage in the scientific literature, whether as a current name or synonym. APNI does not recommend any particular taxonomy or nomenclature. For a listing of currently accepted scientific names for the Australian vascular flora, please use the Australian Plant Census (APC) link above.

Comment: "Endlicher did not see specimens of H. teretifolia var. hirsuta but merely adopted Robert Brown's two unnamed taxa, designated α and β under H. pugioniformis; Endlicher's name derives from the characteristic used to distinguish Brown's α and β namely "calyx sericea" and "calyx hirsuta". Brown commented that H. pugioniformis β was perhaps a good species."

APC Comment: A.D.Chapman, Austral. Pl. Name Index 1517 (1991) lists "Hakea pugioniformis var. hirsuta Meisn., nom. illeg. non. Endl.". However, Meisner clearly referred to Brown, and cited the specimen which is the type of H. pugioniformis var [beta] R.Br. and H. pugioniformis [beta] hirsuta Endl. Meisner was therefore not creating a new name but adopting that of Brown (and by implication) that of Endlicher. -
