Etymology:
"Referring to the extinguisher-shaped calyx"
Combination made by indirect reference to base name, via citation of "Britten, Ill. Bot., Cook's Voy." [i.e. J.Banks & D.Solander, Ill. Austral. Pl. Cook's Voy. 2: 40, pl. 123 (1901)], where the basionym is given under Huttum calyptratum (Miers) Britten.
Bailey attributes the name to "R. Br. Benth. in Fl. Austr. III., 288" [i.e. G.Bentham, Fl. Austral. 3: 288 (1867)]. Bentham uses the name to refer to some specimens that he considers likely to be intermediates between Barringtonia speciosa and B. acutangula but does not accept it as a species.
