Vascular Plants
Australian Plant Name Index (APNI)
The Australian Plant Name Index (APNI) is a tool for the botanical community that deals with plant names and their usage in the scientific literature, whether as a current name or synonym. APNI does not recommend any particular taxonomy or nomenclature. For a listing of currently accepted scientific names for the Australian vascular flora, please use the Australian Plant Census (APC) link above.
Comment:The gender of the generic name is here treated as neuter (see W.L.Tjaden, Taxon 44(2): 213-215 (1995), and nomenclatural editor's note by D.H.Nicolson, Taxon 44(2): 215-216 (1995), for discussion).
Text:"Likewise I argue that Trianthema (three-flowered plant) and Dendranthema (tree-flowered plant) ought to be treated as first declension feminine singulars, as done by the original authors (or by Linnaeus's son, in the case of Trianthema L.), not as a second declension neuter plurals (three-flowers, tree-flowers)."
Text:"Generic names apparently ending in -anthema, such as Trianthema (Aizoaceae) and Dendranthema (Asteraceae), are neuter plural in Latin and are to be corrected to neuter singular -anthemum, thus Trianthemum and Dendranthemum."
APC Comment:The generic name is here treated as neuter, following W.L.Tjaden, Taxon 44(1): 213-215 (1995), but maintained as a singular noun under ICN Art. 20.1 (Melbourne Code, 2012).
