The Australian Algae Name Index (AANI) is a tool for the botanical community that deals with algae names and their usage in the scientific literature, whether as a current name or synonym. AANI does not recommend any particular taxonomy or nomenclature. For a listing of currently accepted scientific names for the Australian Algae, please use the Australian Algae List (AAL) link above.

Comment: Womersley 1984: 168, 178 separates R. tortuosum from Chaetomorpha capillaris. Nomenclaturally and taxonomically this has been shown not to be the case in the northern hemisphere (see the discussion in Silva et al 1996:936). Since there appears to be a warm-water and cold-water species in Australia I have decided that the warm-water species be given the name R. capillaris Kuetzing and the cold-water species C. capillaris sensu Womersley. One problem with this is that R. capillare = R. tortuosum (Dillwyn) Kuetzing, in the view of Silva et al 1996:787. I have decided not to synonymise these two names in this database purely to keep the data on the three possible entities separate. The QLD Damp. record is based on Lewis 1987 Dept of Def. Report MRL-R-1063 p. 12. -
