Eucalyptus oblonga was recognised as a distinct species by Chippendale (1988) and included E. deformis, E. sparsifolia and E. oblonga var. rugulosa. Brooker & Kleinig, Field Guide Eucalypts 1: 281 (1999) merged the broader leaved forms of E. oblonga with E. globoidea, but kept E. sparsifolia as a distinct species, incorporating the narrower leaved forms of 'E. oblonga'.
