Etymology: "The epithet honours Ronald Campbell Gunn (1808-1881), an avid Tasmanian plant collector and friend of James [sic; Joseph] Milligan. He corresponded extensively with Joseph Hooker at Kew, and seems to be the first to have suspected that this species was a taxon distinct from C. pleurogynoides (Gunn, in sched., K)."
