Type: "From a cultivated plant collected by myself in the mountains near Tinaroo Dam north Queensland in January, 1964. The plant grew on a rock with plants of D. speciosum var. curvicaule. D. ruppianum grew plentifully on Casuarina trees nearby. The plant flowered in cultivation in September, 1981." (holo: BRI)
